On 21 July 2025, the Bombay High Court acquitted all 12 individuals convicted by a special MCOCA court in 2015 for the coordinated train bombings on 11 July 2006, which killed 189 and injured some 800 people
The court found that the prosecution had “utterly failed to prove their case”, citing coerced confessions, unreliable witness testimony, and weak/extraneous evidence
It also overturned the death sentences for five and life imprisonment for seven others. Justices Anil Kilor and S.C. Chandak refused to uphold the capital punishment and ordered the immediate release of those not held in other cases
Families of victims expressed distress, questioning who will be held accountable now, and why it took 19 years to reach a verdict
The state may still appeal to the Supreme Court, so further litigation is possible
