Kochi is on track to become the first city in India to introduce a light tram network, with Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) preparing to approve the plan soon.
This modern tram system is designed to complement the existing metro network, aiming to ease traffic congestion, improve public transport access, and promote eco-friendly urban mobility. Unlike the metro, the light tram will serve areas not currently covered, providing a much-needed alternative to packed buses and rising private vehicle use.
The pilot phase includes a 6.2-kilometer route starting from MG Road to Thevara, passing through key areas like Shanmugham Road and the High Court.
A major highlight is the cost advantage. While metro lines typically cost around ₹300 crore per kilometer, the light tram system is expected to cost just ₹75 crore per kilometer—only one-fourth the expense.
Each tram will be around 25 meters long, featuring three coaches with a total capacity of up to 240 passengers. The system will run on electric-hybrid technology, capable of covering up to 45 kilometers with just a six-minute charge—making it both efficient and sustainable.
