Chennai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has left fans on edge once again regarding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Speaking after CSK’s final IPL 2025 match on Sunday (May 25), the 44-year-old icon said he would take some time off in his hometown Ranchi before deciding whether to return for the 2026 season.
Dhoni’s statement came after CSK signed off their campaign in style, defeating table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) by a commanding 83-run margin. Addressing the post-match presentation, Dhoni emphasized that his decision would be based on the same criteria he evaluates every year: fitness, hunger, and team contribution.
“It depends,” Dhoni said. “Again, I would say the same thing: I have four-five months to decide, there’s no hurry. Every year, it takes 15% more effort to keep the body fit. This is top-level, professional cricket — you have to be at your best. It’s not just about performance, because if players retired based on that, many would retire at 22.”
Reflecting on the broader picture, the legendary skipper added,
“What’s important is to assess how much hunger you have, your fitness levels, and how much you can contribute. Whether the team still needs you — that’s key. I have time. I’ll go back to Ranchi, enjoy a few bike rides, and then decide.”
While Dhoni neither confirmed a return nor hinted at retirement, he made it clear that he would take a well-deserved break before making up his mind.
“I’m not saying I’m done. I’m not saying I’m coming back. As I said, I have the luxury of time. When you have that luxury, why not use it to think and decide?”
Dhoni’s words have once again stirred speculation among CSK fans, many of whom continue to hope that ‘Thala’ will don the yellow jersey for at least one more season.
