In a bid to curb rising road accidents, the Bihar government has issued an order banning the transportation of schoolchildren in auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws (totos) from April 1, 2025. The decision was taken due to safety concerns, including overcrowding, lack of proper security measures, and frequent violations of traffic rules.
The directive, issued by the Traffic Police Inspector, references a notification from the Bihar Transport Department (Notification No. 06/ Miscellaneous (E-Rickshaw)- 07/2015-Transport). It explicitly states that e-rickshaws and e-carts should not be used for school transportation. Despite a prior public notice on January 21, 2025, reports indicate that schoolchildren are still being transported via e-rickshaws, increasing the risk of accidents.
The new regulation aims to ensure safer travel for students and prevent potential road mishaps caused by unsafe transportation practices.
