Tech billionaire Elon Musk has confirmed that his $1 billion offer to rename Wikipedia to “Dickipedia” remains active. The controversial proposal was first made in October, when Musk jokingly referred to it as a “stiff and firm offer” on social media.
Musk, who owns X (formerly Twitter), revived the topic after a user mentioned it on Tuesday. He replied, “True. Offer still stands,” reiterating his willingness to pay $1 billion for the name change.
The proposal comes amidst Musk’s criticism of Wikipedia, accusing the platform of having a left-leaning bias. Earlier this year, he argued that the site was “broken” and labeled it “Wokipedia” in reference to what he described as a tendency to portray Republicans and former President Donald Trump in a negative light while promoting left-wing ideologies.
Musk also questioned the Wikimedia Foundation’s fundraising practices, stating that the platform doesn’t require large sums of money to operate. He highlighted that while a text-only version of Wikipedia requires around 51GB, the entire database, including all media and languages, totals 428TB. In 2022, Wikimedia reported $154 million in revenue with $145 million in expenses.
The billionaire’s playful yet provocative suggestion continues to spark debate online, with some users finding humor in the offer and others raising concerns about the implications for the integrity of the platform.
As of now, the Wikimedia Foundation has not responded to Musk’s renewed comments.
