On January 19, 2025, a fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. The blaze, caused by a gas cylinder explosion, affected at least 18 temporary tents. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, and no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred around 4:10 p.m. in the kitchen of the Geeta Press camp near Karpatriji’s camp in Sector 19 of the Mela area. Emergency teams, including fire brigade and police, responded promptly to control the situation.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site to assess the situation and ensure the safety of attendees. The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is the world’s largest religious gathering, with over 400 million people expected to participate over six weeks. Devotees come to bathe at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, believing it cleanses them of sins and releases them from the cycle of rebirth.

Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a safety advisory to prevent future occurrences, emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols during the festival.
