In a major step towards improving emergency healthcare, the government has announced free medical treatment for road accident victims across the country from March 2025. Under this initiative, accident victims will receive cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh in both government and private hospitals, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) acting as the nodal agency.
To ensure effective implementation, Section 162 of the Motor Vehicle Act (1988) has been amended. Before the nationwide rollout, a successful pilot project was conducted over the last five months in six states, including Haryana, Punjab, Assam, and Puducherry.
According to NHAI officials, any accident victim—whether accompanied by family or not—will receive immediate medical attention as soon as they are brought to a hospital by police, citizens, or organizations. No upfront payment or deposit will be required. This scheme aims to save lives by ensuring swift access to critical healthcare without financial barriers.
