The Jharkhand government has imposed a complete ban on the sale of gutkha and pan masala across the state. Any shop found selling these products will face strict legal action. This decision follows an order issued by Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari, which was later implemented by the state health department.

Previously, the sale of gutkha had been prohibited in Jharkhand until 2023. However, over the past year, these products were being sold openly. The latest ban aims to curb the increasing consumption of tobacco-based products among the youth.

Government’s Concern Over Youth Health

Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari expressed concern about the harmful effects of gutkha and tobacco consumption among young people. He stated that excessive use of these products was making them physically and mentally weak, leading them toward harmful addictions. He reiterated that the government would not tolerate the youth falling into the trap of substance abuse.

Crackdown on Illegal Drug Sales

During a state-level orientation program under the National Health Mission (NHM), Dr. Ansari also announced a crackdown on the illegal sale of narcotic drugs. He instructed all civil surgeons to inspect medical stores in their respective districts and take strict action against those selling prohibited drugs.

He emphasized that drug inspectors and civil surgeons have full authority to seal shops found selling banned substances and initiate legal proceedings against offenders. Furthermore, he warned that if any prohibited drugs were found in their jurisdiction, officials responsible would also be held accountable and face disciplinary action.

The Jharkhand government’s strict measures aim to protect public health and prevent substance abuse, ensuring a safer future for the state’s youth.
