Brussels: Fugitive diamond businessman Mehul Choksi has suffered a major blow as a Belgian court rejected his bail plea in the ongoing case related to the ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank loan fraud.
A bench of three judges heard detailed arguments before delivering the verdict. Choksi, who is wanted in India for one of the country’s biggest banking frauds, pleaded for bail citing health issues. He told the court that he was unwell and wished to be with his family. He also expressed his willingness to accept any condition imposed by the court, including wearing a GPS tracking anklet.
Despite these pleas, the court was not convinced and rejected his bail request, marking a significant development in the legal proceedings against him.
Choksi has been evading Indian authorities since the massive financial scam came to light and has been fighting legal battles abroad to avoid extradition.
