Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin officially announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, December 18, following the conclusion of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ended in a draw.
The 38-year-old made the announcement during a press conference at the Gabba in Brisbane, alongside Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
“This is my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin stated. “While I believe I still have some cricket left in me, I will continue playing at the club level. It has been an incredible journey filled with wonderful memories alongside Rohit and my teammates.”
Ashwin’s illustrious international career spans 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, in which he claimed 537, 156, and 72 wickets respectively. A skilled all-rounder, he also scored 3,503 Test runs, including six centuries and 14 fifties, becoming one of just 11 players to achieve over 3,000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket.
Known for his dominance in the game, Ashwin holds the record for 11 Player-of-the-Series awards in Test cricket, tied with Muttiah Muralitharan.
The cricketing fraternity lauds Ashwin as one of India’s finest modern-day spinners, and his contributions to Indian cricket will be remembered for generations.
