Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have appointed Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant as their captain for the 2025 IPL season, principal owner Sanjiv Goenka confirmed on Monday. Pant, who became the most expensive player in IPL history after being bought for ₹27 crore at the 2024 mega auction in Jeddah, is set to lead his second IPL franchise after previously captaining Delhi Capitals (DC).

LSG, who previously made the playoffs in the 2022 and 2023 editions, missed out in 2024, finishing seventh on the points table. Pant will aim to revive the team’s fortunes, succeeding past LSG captains KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, and Krunal Pandya.

The 2025 season marks a new chapter for Pant, whose nine-year stint with DC ended in October 2024 after the franchise released him, citing leadership changes. Pant had been DC’s captain from 2021 to 2024, excluding the 2023 season, when he was recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident.

At LSG, Pant will work under head coach Justin Langer and team mentor Zaheer Khan. The squad also boasts key batting talents such as Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and promising Indian players like Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad.

Pant’s leadership will be pivotal as LSG aims to reclaim a playoff spot and compete for their first IPL title.
