The Telangana government has announced that Muslim employees in state departments, public sector units, and educational institutions will be permitted to leave work at 4 p.m., an hour earlier than usual, during the holy month of Ramadan. This special concession is effective from March 2 to March 31, 2025, aiming to facilitate Muslim employees in offering prayers and attending to other Ramadan-related activities.
The directive applies to all Muslim employees, including teachers, contract and outsourcing staff, as well as those working in boards, corporations, and public sector undertakings. However, the order specifies that in cases where an employee’s presence is required due to exigencies of service, this concession may not be applicable.
The decision has sparked political debate, with opposition parties accusing the government of engaging in appeasement politics. BJP leaders have criticized the move, suggesting it could deepen religious divides and questioning the absence of similar concessions for other religious communities during their festivals.
Following Telangana’s announcement, the Andhra Pradesh government has also granted Muslim employees, including teachers and those hired on a contract or outsourcing basis, permission to leave their workplaces an hour early during Ramadan, from March 2 to March 30, 2025.
Ramadan 2025 is anticipated to begin on the evening of March 2 and conclude on March 31, subject to the sighting of the moon. This holy month is a time for fasting, reflection, prayer, and community for Muslims worldwide.
