Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reached out to the chief ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and the governor of Manipur following the ongoing heavy rainfall that has triggered flood-like conditions across several Northeastern states. Shah assured them of every possible assistance to manage the situation effectively.
“Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast,” Shah posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The region has been battered by continuous rainfall since May 29, causing landslides, flash floods, and lightning strikes. The calamity has already claimed 30 lives, with 22 deaths reported on Saturday alone. The toll includes eight fatalities in Assam, seven in Arunachal Pradesh, four in Mizoram, and three in Meghalaya, according to official data.
Assam Among the Worst Hit
In Assam, over 78,000 people across 15 districts have been affected. The floods have disrupted road, rail, and ferry services, isolating several areas and hampering relief efforts.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to urge residents, especially those in low-lying and riverbank areas, to remain vigilant.
Heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh — Kibitoo (17 cm), Hayuliang (15 cm), Kalaktang (10 cm) — may lead to a sharp rise in river levels downstream.
Assam already witnessing intense rain in Silchar (42 cm), Karimganj (35 cm), Hailakandi (30 cm). ⚠️ People in low-lying and riverbank areas are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories. Stay safe, stay prepared. #AssamFloodAlert,” CM Sarma wrote on X.
Rising Concerns
Authorities across the region are on high alert, monitoring rising river levels and preparing for possible evacuations. Relief and rescue teams have been deployed in affected zones, while weather agencies continue to forecast more rainfall in the coming days.
The situation remains critical, and further updates are awaited from local administrations.
