Effective November 1, 2024, Indian Railways has revised its ticket booking policy, reducing the advance reservation period from 120 days to 60 days. This adjustment is designed to increase availability for genuine travelers and address the issue of frequent cancellations—around 21% of tickets reserved far in advance were being canceled. The shorter reservation period also aims to cut down on “no-shows,” helping prevent vacant seats and enhancing efficiency in railway operations.

Passengers can now book their tickets up to 60 days before their journey, though select express trains will continue with even shorter booking periods. Notably, foreign tourists can still book tickets up to 365 days in advance. This change is expected to streamline the booking process, discouraging bulk reservations and making seats more accessible for those with immediate travel plans.
