New Delhi, December 13, 2024 – On this day in 2001, the Indian Parliament witnessed a cowardly terrorist attack that was thwarted by the unparalleled courage and sacrifice of the nation’s security forces. The attack, which sought to target the heart of India’s democracy, was valiantly countered, and the temple of democracy was safeguarded.

A solemn tribute ceremony was held today in the Parliament complex to honor the martyrs who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and numerous other political leaders, dignitaries, and armed forces personnel. 

The leaders paid floral tributes to the memorial and observed a moment of silence to remember the heroes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the nation’s gratitude, stating, “The sacrifice of our brave security personnel continues to inspire generations. A grateful nation will forever remain indebted to their supreme sacrifice.”

The attack on December 13, 2001, claimed the lives of nine individuals, including Delhi Police personnel, CRPF jawans, and a Parliament staff member. Their heroism ensured the safety of India’s democracy and averted a potential disaster.

Today’s tribute stands as a testament to the resilience of India and the unyielding spirit of those who defend the nation. The ceremony concluded with a resolve to uphold and protect the values of democracy for which these heroes gave their lives.
