Delhi is dealing with a worsening pollution emergency, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting “very poor” levels, surpassing 300 in many locations. The severe drop in air quality is largely due to seasonal stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana and ongoing high vehicular emissions. Stubble burning alone has contributed around 3.5% to the pollution levels and may increase in the coming weeks.
To address the crisis, authorities in Delhi have activated Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Under this, diesel generators are restricted, and construction sites are required to implement dust control measures. Authorities are also enforcing road water sprinkling and banning open waste burning. Parking fees have been increased, and public transport options are being enhanced to encourage people to reduce personal vehicle use, aiming to curb the rising pollution levels.
