Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official government notification released today.
Das, who completed his second term as RBI Governor in December 2024, will serve alongside Pramod Kumar Mishra, the current Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister since September 2019.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Das’s appointment, stating that his tenure will be “co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
During his six-year tenure at the RBI, Das oversaw monetary policy, debt and forex markets, and financial sector regulation.
Prior to his role at the RBI, Das held key positions in the Ministry of Finance and represented India in major international institutions.
His extensive experience in finance and governance is expected to contribute significantly to his new role in the Prime Minister’s Office.
